Janice, the founder of Under Carrey’s Care named the center as an acknowledgement of the guidance, compassion and parenting her mother, Mrs. Carrey exhibited to her, her siblings and the community of family, friends and neighbors.  At the age of twelve, Carrey became a mom to her younger brothers upon the death of her mother and continued that caring spirit on as she became a mother to her own children.

Every child was “under her care” if you crossed her doorstep. You were welcomed as one of her children, clothed, fed, harbored for a good night’s sleep, encouraged, disciplined, given school supplies and books to read, taken to church and to the library and even tutored by her older children if that was needed to bring back a good report card. 

She created a cooperative environment of support for her children. their friends and extended family and even became legally responsible for a few others even though she and her husband had 8 children of their own. (She did all of this while still working full-time) Children knew they could come to the Bell house to get a meal, get money for a field trip, shoes and clothing. There is no one more deserving in Janice’s life that would exhibit the compassion and love she wanted to represent in this program but her mother, Carrey.
